• You should start training your dog as early as you can. If your dog is a puppy, get started as soon as feasible. If your dog is adopted, start right away as well. The best time to train a dog is when it first meets a new owner. Even if the dog couldn’t be trained in the past, a new owner with the proper skill will be able to teach the dog a new way to interact.
  • Training will exercise the brain.
  • Training positively will build a great relationship between you and your new pet. Dogs require trust, which can quickly be earned with the appropriate training techniques.
  • Training should be based on POSITIVE rewards. Negative reinforcement should never be used except for when the dog needs corrected for destructive behaviors.
  • Never punish your dog, this will cause him/her to be frightened of you. Show your dog what you are trying to teach him/her, NEVER physically force anything.
  • Be patient and keep commands consistent.
  • You must have the dogs undivided attention for the duration of the training session, keep sessions short.
  • Never ‘train’ in a busy area, with distractions.
  • Distractions can be utilized in the advanced stages of training.
